Which audio player suits which age?

The question is rarely which one is best, but which one suits a child at this particular age. The difference lies less in sound quality than in how a child operates the device — and whether you can get your own files onto it.
Figure-based players: from around two years
Placing a figure on the player is the simplest conceivable way to operate one — children can do it long before they can read. The trade-off is that each figure costs money, and the space on a recordable figure is limited, usually around 90 minutes. For the first few years it is often the least stressful choice all the same, because nothing can go wrong.
Card-based players: from around four years
Cards require a little more fine motor skill, but they are flatter, cheaper, and easier to sort. Getting your own content onto them is usually less expensive than with figures. Children this age begin to organise their own collections — cards suit that well.
Memory-card players: from around five years
The cheapest way to store many of your own files: insert the card, add a folder, done. No ongoing costs, no account needed. The trade-off is that operation is more abstract — titles are selected via buttons rather than a physical object. For children who already understand that folders contain things, this is not a problem.
Phones, the car, and the browser
Underrated: most families listen on the go. An MP3 plays in the car, on a phone, and in a browser without any additional device. If you do not yet have a player, you do not need to buy one to get started — and even those who do have one often want the file on their phone as well.
The question to ask before you buy
Can you get your own files onto the device, and how much effort does it take? With some systems it takes two minutes; with others you need an account, an app, and a workaround. If you plan to use your own or purchased MP3s, check this before buying — it is the point that causes the most frustration later.
Decide by age, not by sound quality: figures for the youngest, cards from four, memory card from five. And before buying, find out how your own files get onto the device.
