Loading your own audio story onto a recordable figure: step by step

Your own audio story reaches the Toniebox in six short steps. Three of them matter: upload the file to the Creative Tonie in the tonies app or on my.tonies.com, sync the box once, place the figure. On a normal Wi-Fi connection this takes a few minutes. Almost all the error cases tonies keeps help pages for concern syncing and downloading, and that is exactly where Toniebox 1 and Toniebox 2 differ. This guide follows the manufacturer’s help pages as of 16 September 2026 and applies to any audio file of your own, including a personalised children’s audiobook that arrives as an MP3.
What you need before you start
Five things need to be ready: a Creative Tonie, the recordable figure as opposed to the ready-made Tonies with fixed content; the tonies app on your phone or a browser for my.tonies.com; a Toniecloud account with the Toniebox already activated; a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network within reach of the box, which tonies lists as a requirement; and the audio file on the device you upload from, for example the MP3 from an order email. A charging cable does no harm but is not required for syncing. The box only needs to be switched on.
Step 1: Place the figure on the box once
The first contact between figure and box happens without the app. Place the new Creative Tonie once on the switched-on Toniebox connected to Wi-Fi. The box greets the figure with a short message, and it then appears in your account. If it does not appear, it is usually still tied to another household, for instance because it was bought second-hand. The previous owner then has to remove it in their account or invite you as a member. There is no way around that from your side. Done when the Creative Tonie appears with its name in your app.
Step 2: Upload the file, in the app or in the browser
In the app, open the „Mine“ tab, then the Creative Tonie, and tap the grey Tonie symbol with the arrow. Then pick the file from your device. In the browser on my.tonies.com the same works from any computer, which is more convenient for larger files than a phone. The limits tonies states: up to 90 minutes of total playing time per figure and a maximum of 1 GB per file. The Creative Tonie accepts MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC and OGG among other formats. A Silbenwald story comes as an MP3 and is far shorter than 90 minutes, so several fit on one figure. One thing only works in the app: recording a voice message directly, such as a goodnight message from grandma, via the grey microphone button. Done when the file appears in the Creative Tonie’s track list.
Step 3: Put the tracks in order
Several stories on one figure play in the order of the track list. To rearrange them, press and hold the symbol with the three bars next to a track in the app or browser, drag it to where you want it, then save. This only works when the Live function is switched off for that figure; it is meant for greeting messages and is explained in a separate tonies help article. A thought for bedtime stories: put the calmest one last. The Toniebox keeps playing if nobody stops it. The last story is then the one your child falls asleep to.
Step 4: Sync the box, differently for each generation
This is where the paths split. The Toniebox 2 is the newer generation with a light ring, the Toniebox 1 the classic cube without one; the app also shows it next to the box. Toniebox 1: the box must be switched on, within Wi-Fi range, and no Tonie may be placed on it. Press one ear for about three seconds until you hear a signal. The LED blinks blue. Wait until it turns solid green, and only then place the Creative Tonie. Important: one ear only. Pressing both ears, tonies says, easily lands you in the connection mode for Wi-Fi setup; the box then pulses blue permanently without playing anything. Toniebox 2: it fetches changes by itself, about 30 seconds after being switched on. You press nothing, but place the Creative Tonie only after that half minute. Place it too early and you hear the figure’s old content, because the box has not checked yet.
Step 5: Place the figure and let it load
Now place the Creative Tonie on the box. The download runs as long as the LED under the figure blinks blue and ends with a signal and green light. On the Toniebox 2 this normally takes five to ten seconds per figure according to tonies, on slow Wi-Fi an hour or longer. If it stalls, lifting the figure briefly and placing it again helps; after a Wi-Fi drop the download starts over. After that the story plays without internet. The box needs Wi-Fi only for initial setup, the first placement of a new figure and whenever you change the content on a Creative Tonie. For holidays or grandparents without Wi-Fi that means: load at home, listen anywhere.
Step 6: Change or delete content later
New story, old one out? In the app open the Creative Tonie, „Edit“ next to the playlist, select the track, „Delete content“. Deleting everything at once goes via „Advanced settings“ and „Remove from household“; afterwards the figure has to be placed again as in step 1. In the browser there is „Edit playlist“ with the bin icon. After every change the box needs another sync as in step 4. One piece of advice before deleting: keep the MP3 on your phone or in your mailbox. Then the story can be loaded again at any time.
If the box plays the old story or the download breaks off
If the box plays the old story, that is the case tonies describes for the Toniebox 2: the figure was placed too early. First lift the figure and place it again. If that does not help, restart the box by holding both ears for about 60 seconds or waiting five minutes until it switches itself off, not plugged in while doing so. Then wait 30 seconds and place the figure. If the box reports that the download was interrupted, it has lost the Wi-Fi: move closer to the router, unplug the router for 15 seconds, then place the figure again. If that does not help, tonies support will ask for the Toniebox ID and the router model.
If the box pulses blue, the figure is locked or nothing plays at all
If the Toniebox 1 pulses blue permanently and plays nothing, you have landed in connection mode: lift the figure, press both ears at the same time until you hear a signal. For syncing afterwards, one ear only, three seconds. If the app says the Tonie is locked for you, the figure was recorded in another household, for instance at the grandparents’. The owner has to set the switch „Play in this household or everywhere?“ to everywhere on my.tonies.com, and in your household „Play foreign Creative Tonies“ must be switched on. If the figure plays nothing at all, on the Toniebox 2 first check the firmware, it should be at least 1.6, then switch off and on and check in the app whether the box is online.
Questions parents ask about this
Does the box have to sit on the charging station while downloading? No, tonies only states that it has to be switched on and connected to Wi-Fi. How many stories fit on a Creative Tonie? tonies states 90 minutes of total playing time and 1 GB per file; the manufacturer does not name a fixed limit on the number of files, so several short stories fit on one figure. Does it also work with a WAV or M4A file? Yes, besides MP3 the Creative Tonie accepts M4A, M4B, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG and WMA among others; MP3 is the simplest format. And on a different audio box?
