Personalised stories: what do they actually offer?

2 min read

A child's own name in a story is not a gimmick. It changes how the child listens — but only if the story would work just as well without it.

Why a child's own name holds attention

People respond to their own name from a very early age — it draws attention even through background noise. In a story, that means the child is not a spectator but someone directly addressed. With children who otherwise find it hard to stay focused on one thing, the difference is often immediately apparent.

When the child is the hero, perspective shifts

A story in which a child's own name is attached to courage, curiosity, or kindness is more than entertainment: it shows a version of themselves they may not yet feel certain of. This is particularly useful before significant events — a doctor's visit, the first day of school, moving house. Not as a lesson, but as an experience that has already gone well once.

How to recognise a good personalised story

By the fact that it would still be a story without the name. If the name has simply been inserted wherever the word child would otherwise appear, you can tell — the text sounds like a template. A good personalised story uses the name sparingly and at varied points, weaves favourite things into the plot rather than listing them, and resists the urge to end with a moral.

What personalisation cannot do

It cannot turn a weak story into a good one. And it is no substitute for closeness: the effect arises not from the child hearing themselves named, but from knowing that someone invented this story especially for them. That is why a personalised story works best when it is listened to together.

How often is sensible?

Less often than you might think. A story a child truly loves will be listened to twenty times and carries its effect every time. A constant stream of new stories makes the special one ordinary. When recurring characters and continuing adventures are involved, rhythm matters more than quantity — once a week is plenty.

The name opens the door; the story has to hold its own after that. Used sparingly and listened to together, personalised stories offer a great deal.
